Chair Cushion Tutorial

For years I have meant to make a cushion for the hard chair in my sewing room.  I found this perfect canvas material and decided to recover an old seat-pad

You need

• 2 pieces of material
• 1 seat pad
• 2 poppers or buttons to close the cushion cover
• 4 pieces of ribbon/ties (if the seat pad has no ties)

Measure around the cushion and leave 1.5cm for the seam allowance.  Cut out 2 pieces for the cover.  (I sewed 2 pieces together for the top, but 2 matching pieces or 2 contrasting pieces will work fine.)

Turn under the top seam and sew along: see below.  I used a zigzag stitch. If you need to attach ties, do this by pinning them on now (Close to the corners of the cushion) and machine-sewing them to the inside of the seat cover. 

Pin the two pieces of fabric together (facing inwards) and sew around the remaining 3 sides.  See below.   You should have an envelope now, ready to turn inside-out. 

 Iron on the reverse and snip into the rounded corners, top and bottom, to help the curve sit properly.

Turn back the right way and iron again.  You may need to iron into the corners.  Pop the cushion pad inside. Pin the poppers in place and sew on.

You should now have a finished cushion, complete with poppers and ties to secure it to the chair!
